A last burst of enthusiasm is clearing away some long-standing bugs in the secret project. However, in the process of eliminating bugs, I managed to add one – an important image stopped being displayed. Puzzling. I tried reverting, but the bug was still there. Okay, that’s very weird. I went to older code, where I *knew* the image had been displaying fine, but the bug was still there.
Huh. Oh! They all use the same database! Went to a different database. Bug was still there. WHAT THE HELL.
Turned out to be an actual bug in Firefox 7.01. It’ll be fixed in Firefox 8 (released Nov 8th), but meanwhile I have to scramble for an alternate way of presenting this rather crucial bit of data…

I’m finally unveiling my secret project on Monday. It hit the point where I wasn’t doing much work on it, and there’s enough of it present to at least show what I’m aiming for.

So, I’m working up to eating something today after a very thorough purging last night, with the excellent assistance of either a stomach bug or food poisoning. If it’s the former, it’s probably what Jade had on Friday night after we got back from the CiSRA puzzle dinner. She vomited copiously and with an excellent spray pattern, a couple of times through the night. And that’s exactly what I did last night, so that’s a datum.
However, she did not have the diarrhea. So perhaps it was the laksa I had for lunch yesterday, possibly exacerbated by the coq au vin we had last night.

Well, it has definitely hit the time when I’m not working on the game much, so I’ll set a deadline and release what I’ve done at that point. The tentative deadline is one month from now which, given my current rate of progress, will be enough to unbreak what I’ve broken.
Meanwhile, the only project which is really taking “game writing” time is playing guitar. I’m doing a lot of that. I started learning Leo Brouwer’s Cancion de Cuna, which is a particularly lovely drop-D tune, and I’ve been getting Albeniz’ Asturias, Granados’ La Maja de Goya, and Tarrega’s Recuerdos De La Alhambra into rough shape. Very rough shape. Heaps of fun, though. My plan is to record some of my easier pieces on youtube, and perhaps update them as I improve.

Oh yeah, I also have bursitis in my left elbow. Been there about two weeks now. I’m really not sure what brought it on, but it got quite swollen for a while. Fairly painful when I rest my elbow on anything, e.g. my normal sleeping position. Between that and the (still somewhat aching) right shoulder injury, I’m definitely feeling my age.
Anyway, that’s why I’ve been quiet.

Okay, a film I directed won an Emmy.
Well, okay, it was “Star Wars Uncut”, and I directed scene 307, but that still counts, right? It won an Emmy for Interactive Media: Fiction. So there we go. DMM, MMM and Mr Irrgang (and Mr Coker’s arm) are also Emmy winners.

The CiSRA Puzzle Competition opened today, and two of my puzzles are in the opening four. I designed one (“Big Question”) to be easy, and one (“Welcome to the Machine”) to be medium difficulty. Big Question has been solved by 11 teams in the four and a half hours since the competition opened, but nobody has even had an attempt at Welcome to the Machine! It’s the one unsolved puzzle of the competition so far.

So, I strained a tendon in my shoulder (it’s on the mend, but it’s been sore for about a week now, and it was very painful for several days), and then Jade got diarrhea and a runny nose, and Von had mouth ulcers and a sore throat. Then I got the diarrhea and sore throat. So we were all sick together on Tuesday and today.

So, I have another thing. This time, it’s just me. The timing is a little unfortunate – there’s a new section of anotherblog for discussion about global climate change, which is just getting going. My intention is to try and filter out some of the poor logic, out-of-date data, and as much rhetoric as I can, while keeping references to primary data sources and good logic. At the moment, I’m just in the data gathering phase, where I’m listing all the links that have come up in recent conversations, and slowly reading through them for useful data.
So, um, yeah. No activity from me in the last few days ’cause I’m sick. So far it’s an unusually quick stall, even for me…

I managed a good seven or eight hours on the secret project on the weekend. Very pleasing. Actually, there’s hardly been a day in the last month that I haven’t worked on it a little.
My current plan is that I will release it when I run out of steam, or when the feature list is interesting enough for other people to see, whichever comes first. I’m guessing it’ll be the former.
