Palm-pilot vs. Olympics
September 27, 2000 on 4:39 pm | No CommentsWow. That was a fairly busy period of work. But now I’m just itching to start again on the old creative stuff. I bought a palm pilot the other day - an M100, which was all very nice except the connection to the PC was stuffed, so I have to get a replacement. And because it’s Olympics time, that was very sloooow coming. It isn’t here yet, and it’s two weeks later.
Meanwhile, I’ve been to see a whole bunch of Olympic stuff, and it has been fun. Table-tennis, Fencing, Badminton and Volleyball. There were some exceedingly thrilling matches there, some grossly obnoxious crowds, and a whole lot of advertising that made me remember why I still haven’t tuned my TV. Highlights: well, the table-tennis was probably the best game to watch, but three out of the four semi-final/finals matches in the fencing went to 14 all (and the bouts are “first-to-15″), and the volleyball between Korean and US women’s teams went to 2 all, and 13 all in the final set (which also goes to 15), evetually won by the US, curse them. Some very impressive sports - but it has further crystallised my bias towards games, instead of sports. I really hate the kind of sports supporting where they cheer when the opposing team makes a mistake…
They like me! They really like me!
September 13, 2000 on 2:51 pm | No CommentsAnd a minute later… I got a nice email from the president of Atlas Games (John Nephew) the other day saying that he liked “Once Upon A Time” and has requested extra copies for the designers! And also that he seems keen to get any legal hurdles in showing OUAT-TM (Once Upon A Time - The Movie) out of the way. What next? Don’t ask me, I’ve never released a short film before!
Anna is back
September 13, 2000 on 2:47 pm | No CommentsTime for the proverbial “Wahoo!”. Anna’s back in town! Sleepy, yes, but this week I have found out that she is a like a happy sleepy puppy not a scratchy sleepy kitty. Jetlag is rather unpleasant, but it isn’t so bad if you have nothing much urgent to do in the week after you get back. Oh. That reminds me, I gotta get back to work.
Silly deadlines
September 6, 2000 on 5:59 pm | No CommentsWell, the libraries are taking an age to compile… once again, it is the season of silly deadlines. And I’d like to have time to think, to get out and prepare movies, think about the olympics a bit, but what the hell: I’ve been back a week and a half and I really don’t want to think too much, not until Anna gets back anyway.
Anna is still in Greece, in sun right now while it’s dark here and I’m far too busy to think…
Smuck
September 1, 2000 on 3:58 pm | No CommentsBy the way, the correct collective noun for jellyfish is “smuck”.
Jellyfish
September 1, 2000 on 3:55 pm | No CommentsWe were travelling between mainland Greece and Evia, the island where Anna’s Aunt lives. The car ferry was brightly painted but old, like those popular scenic paintings of whitewashed buildings in the sun, with blue windows, empty pots, and at least one cat. Well, there weren’t any cats on the ferry, but there were flying fish and jellyfish, plate sized and an odd green-brown colour. Some looked like they had been through speedboat propellers, but were nonetheless grimly holding on. I spyed one from the high-up passenger deck, and then another, and hurried off to tell Anna. When we got back to the railing, there were hundreds of the buggers. All the way from the mainland to Evia, an hour-and-a-half ferry trip, we could see swarms of jellyfish.
The next day, and for the entire week afterwards, I went swimming at the local beach without a second thought. I had completely forgotten about the jellyfish. I had so completely forgotten about them that it only occured to me to look for them now.
They were the jellyfish of forgetfulness.
