well, speaking as a card-carrying left-wing anti-nationalist italian who is capable of disapproving of his own nation’s inherent corrupt tendencies, in your face “socceroos”!!! perhaps if you played “football” instead of “soccer” like the other 16 you might have done better. no, seriously, aussies did you all proud, but on balance, Italy deserved to win. i remember that peanuts cartoon; a small island of existential reflection in an american sea of self-proclamed unambiguity.
Speaking as a right wing ex-italian Australian, the Italians deserved the win only on the grounds that their “trips” etc. and other claims for fouls are extensively and expertly researched and trained. That made the difference on the day.
how can you be right wing and “ex italian”? shouldn’t national pride come in there somewhere? anyway, what was your Bresciano doing falling about the pitch totally unaided by external influence? (mind you he might have learned that playing for Parma….)
I know nothing about football but what I read in the papers, but I think the Italians deserved to win. The Australians had possession most of the time and were racing about madly- presumably trying to get the Italians to race about madly and wear themselves out so that the Australians’ ‘superior fitness’ would give them the edge. But the Italians weren’t having any of it: they didn’t move much, they didn’t have possession much, but they still *controlled the game* and they had more shots at goal.
Not that I could get back to sleep afterwards, of course, and ended up watching the whole documentary on Boca and River that followed…
Everyone here in Ireland was glad Australia lost because otherwise we’d dominate all world sports. To be fair, we’ve been leaving soccer alone for a long time.
And, dammit, everyone here agrees that the penalty was totally unjustified.

Bresciano’s acting efforts were amateurish compared to the seasoned highly-paid Italian superstars.

Marco Parigi, meet Marco Angelini. I want a fair fight, come out clean between clenches, no low blows. Well, no *more* low blows, anyway.
Also, for some reason this makes me want to write a set of rules for converting between football (soccer) and football (rugby).
1. Players are permitted to tackle the person with the ball.
2. The offside rule is a little stronger…

All this Marco is very confusing.

Next time, gadget.
