Jogging distances
June 17th 2010 -
So, I’ve been very gradually increasing the distance I jog. For the last two months or so, I’ve been going between 7k and 8k, and it’s been quite enjoyable. I don’t feel worn out at the end of it, and there’s often a period in the middle where I really get into my stride and feel a bit unstoppable, particularly with a good bit of music going.
Soooooo, I went 10k yesterday and it was very hard going (didn’t help that it was hillier than I was expecting) and now I’m trashed. Back to 7k for me! One reason I keep jogging is that I don’t ever push myself to the point of not enjoying it, so I don’t ever dread the next one. The past few weeks I’ve been wondering whether I should go for a half-marathon at some point, and last night I pushed myself. Well, I can fairly definitively say: no half-marathons, not for a good long while. After last night, I came to the conclusion that I’m not in this for the challenge. The best bit about jogging is that it’s a good time to meditate (well, as close as I get).

My exercise regieme, never all that well-instituted to begin with, has completely gone to crap in the past six months. So you may be mildly disappointed in not nailing 10 k’s, but believe me it could be worse.
BTW we really have to start talking about the October Occasion!

This may not be relevent to you, but I found jogging became a lot easier when I reduced my expectations of what I could do. I don’t have to run the whole way. I don’t have to go a long way. I don’t have to increase the distance/speed. In fact, I can reduce the distance/speed if I want. As long as I do it once or twice a week, it can be ten minutes of going around the park.
This, for the most part, stopped me getting too anti about jogging. I never let it get to the point where I was dreading the next session.
Anyway, you obviously have other priorities (which I’ll find out about soon enough, hoorah!) that no doubt have affected your ability to get out there.
Also, Canberra, man. I don’t know how you do it. It’s fucking freezing there.

Well, we have a treadmill (now working again) so most of it I just do indoors. That helps, as does the big screen TV of distracting-you-from-how-far-you’re-running.

We’re still looking for one part for our cross-trainer machine, lost at some point in the move from Francis St. On a rainy day like today it’d sure come in handy.

There’s better indoor exercise than that – try baby – lifting. Or if you are not at that stage yet, move furniture for the baby around to see if it works better, then move it back. Do all the dishes for your pregnant wife (and whole family if appropriate) Mow the lawn twice as often as it needs to (Use scissors if that is not enough exercise) Walk Through all the baby shops in town. Walk TO all the baby shops in town. Just some ideas really – I guess some of it is more muscle building than cardio, but I like to involve my chores in my excersise regimen.
